AMAZING GELAEL TAKES SECOND PODIUM OF SILVERSTONE WEEKEND

Silverstone,  27th May 2013 - One day after he became the youngest driver ever to stand on the podium after a British Formula 3 International Series race, Indonesian Sean Gelael did it again!

Aged 16 years, six months and 24 days, Gelael had finished a stunning third in the first race of the weekend on the Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit on Saturday. And on Sunday, aged 16 years, six months and 25 days, he repeated that fantastic result.

Sean, who is still badly lacking in experience compared to his rivals, started his Double R Racing Dallara-Mercedes from third on the grid. He passed team-mate Tatiana Calderon at the start and moved into second place behind his other Double R team-mate, Antonio Giovinazzi.

Gelael ran in this excellent position for five laps before Will Buller, the championship leader who is in his fourth season of Formula 3, passed rookie Sean. But the newcomer did a superb job to match the pace of his rivals ahead and take his second podium position of the weekend.

The result also moved him into an incredible second place in the championship, just a few months after he first drove an F3 car.

“Antonio had a gap right from the beginning and from then on it was between me and Buller,” said Gelael. “Will made a good move. Of course, I always want to take every point possible but he had caught me up quite quickly and I knew he would try something soon.

“From then on I was able to keep the pace, but towards the end I tried to save my tyres because we only have two sets allowed for each race weekend, and I needed to cool them down for the final race.

“This is a great result for me and for Indonesia – I’m so proud!”

Sean started the final race from third on the grid and was looking good for another strong result. He kept his position on the first lap but soon his tyres began to fade dramatically.

He did his best to hold on but this time he had to be satisfied with sixth position. “The tyres were absolutely finished,” he said. “It was the same for all the drivers from our team, and we were just slow.

“I had a good fight with Nicholas Latifi, and I wasn’t going to give my place up without a struggle! But our pace was 1.5 seconds slower per lap, especially towards the end when it got worse and worse. My tyres were almost down to the canvas.”

Still, it was magnificent weekend for Sean. His result in race three dropped him to fifth in the championship, but he is only two points away from second place and there is everything to fight for in the next round, at the legendary Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium at the end of July.

In the meantime, it is back to Gelael’s main programme of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship at the Red Bull Ring in the scenic Austrian mountains next weekend. His big target here is to claim his first European championship point.

“For sure my confidence is up,” he said. “It will be difficult, because now it is back to the same situation as usual, where I go to track I don’t know. But I’ll be giving it everything.”
